WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The second-seeded Marist women’s tennis team has advanced to the final of the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship with a 4-2 victory over third-seeded Niagara on Saturday.

The Red Foxes started the day on a good note by capturing the double point in three tightly-contested matches. Marist pairings won at second doubles 9-8 and third doubles 9-7, with Niagara winning first doubles 9-7.

Sophomore Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) earned Marist’s first singles point with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at sixth singles. Senior Joana Sun (Mansfield, Mass.) then earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at third singles to put Marist ahead 3-1.

The decisive point came from Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii) in second singles versus Sarah Hellstern, the 2013 MAAC Rookie of the Year. In a rematch from last week's regular season contest, Pang avenged her straight set loss to Hellstern with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph when it mattered the most.

Marist will face top-seeded Fairfield in the Sunday’s championship match, which will take place at 10 a.m. This will mark the fourth straight year the Red Foxes and Stags will meet for the MAAC championship, with Marist winning the title in 2011, and Fairfield doing so in 2010 and 2012.
