POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The third-seeded Marist water polo team suffered a 12-9 loss to second-seeded Iona in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament semifinal round on Saturday at McCann Natatorium.
Senior Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) led the Red Foxes offense with four goals and sophomore Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) scored three second half goals. Senior Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and freshman Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pa.) each also scored. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) made eight saves in goal for the Red Foxes.
Marist (24-12, 10-2 MAAC) fell behind 1-0 just 32 seconds into the game as Iona (20-8, 10-2 MAAC) scored just after an exclusion to Marist’s Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) expired.
After nearly four scoreless minutes, Rinker scored two goals in a matter of 42 seconds to give the Red Foxes their only lead of the game at 2-1 with 3:00 left in the first quarter.
The Gaels responded right back however, scoring just nine seconds later to even the score. They added another two goal in the final two minutes to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Rinker scored her third of the game 2:32 into the second quarter to pull Marist within one at 4-3.
Following an Iona goal, Else again made it a one-goal game with a score with 1:28 left.
However, following an exclusion to Ellie Hoffman (Pasadena, Calif.), the Gaels scored with 31 seconds on the clock to take a 6-4 lead at the midway point.
Iona caught the Red Foxes playing sloppy defense to open the third quarter, scoring two quick goals in the first 1:09 to open up an 8-4 lead.
Out of a timeout however, Marist picked up its intensity on both ends of the pool, forcing Iona into bad shots that Thomas easily saved.
The Red Foxes scored three straight goals, one by Rinker and two by Levien to pull back within one at 8-7 with 41 seconds on the clock.
Iona would score another goal as the game clock wound down, scoring again on the man-advantage with just nine seconds left to take a 9-7 lead after three quarters.
An Iona goal with 5:56 left in the fourth quarter increased the deficit to 10-7. Levien scored her third straight goal for Marist with to cut the gap to two goals at 10-8 with 5:15 left, but Iona would not let the Red Foxes get any closer.
The Red Foxes will wrap up their season on Sunday at noon with a consolation round game against fourth-seeded Villanova. The Wildcats fell in Saturday’s second semifinal to top-seeded Wagner by a 13-3 score. The game can be seen live on MAAC.TV.
