POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist football team has wrapped up practice for the spring in advance of the annual Spring Game, which will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Thanks to a strong group of talented returners, the Red Foxes' defense carried over its strong play from the last couple of seasons into this spring.
In 2012, Marist ranked first in the Football Championship Subdivision in Red Zone Defense. The opposition scored on just 23 of 40 trips (57.5 percent) inside the Marist 20. The Red Foxes also ranked among the national leaders in scoring defense and turnover margin.
For this season, three of the Red Foxes four captains are on the defensive side of the ball - rising senior Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.), rising senior free safety Nick Kaszei (Brook Park, Ohio) and rising fifth-year safety Tyler Ramsey (Southbridge, Mass.). Ramsey is returning for a fifth season, and his second as a captain, after his season ended early in 2012 due to injury.
In addition to Ramsey, the Red Foxes will also welcome back other key fifth-year seniors. Defensive end Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.) was a unanimous First Team All-Pioneer Football League selection last year, and has led the team in sacks the last two seasons. Chris Katerianakis (Baltimore, Md.) has been a solid contributor at end and tackle. Marist will also bring back Pioneer Football League Honorable Mention selection Nicholas Foster (Marlton, N.J.), who is entering his junior year at nose tackle.
Several experienced cornerbacks return in Jack Marston (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), Vinny Fuschetto (New Providence, N.J.) and Craig Thompson (Landover, Md.). Safety Zach Adler (Walden, N.Y.) and linebacker Hugh Kirwan (Montvale, N.J.) have enjoyed strong springs as they will compete for starting jobs this year.
Admission to the Spring Game is free. At 4 p.m., an alumni flag football game will be held. The program will also hold a Junior Day, and the schedule for it can be found here.
