Men's Lacrosse Uses Quick Start To Roll Over Saint Joseph's 14-6
PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) had three goals and two assists and the Marist men’s lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the second quarter, en route to a 14-6 non-conference win over Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday night.
Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) and Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each scored two goals and assisted on two others. Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.), given the honor of wearing jersey #34 to honor Eddie Coombs, had three points on two goals and an assist. Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) had two goals and Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) and Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) each had a goal and an assist. Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) made 11 saves in goal for the Red Foxes. Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) was 16-23 on face-offs and tied a season-high with nine ground balls. Marist’s man-down unit killed all eight opportunities it was faced with while the man-up offense converted on 3-5 of its chances.
Radin had a hand in each of the Red Foxes’ (10-2) first four goals as Marist jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes, before Saint Joseph’s could cross midfield with possession. Just 1:39 into the game, Radin set a pick for Rice, who ran around the right side of the cage while Radin snuck around the other side. Rice found Radin alone in front for a quick goal. Less than a minute later, Radin caused a Saint Joseph’s (5-10) turnover on a clear attempt. After scooping up the ground ball, he attempted a pass for Dillon Walker (Wawa, Pa.) that missed its mark but bounced through to Vin Chiodo (Garden City, N.Y.) who ripped a shot for his third career goal. 41 seconds later Radin found Osborn, who bounced in a shot. Radin then returned the favor to Rice, finding him on a pass across the front of the goal for Rice to rip a tough-angle shot that put Marist ahead 4-0 with 10:43 left in the first quarter.
After killing off a minute-long penalty, Begley scored an unassisted tally at the 3:34 mark to put the Red Foxes up 5-0. Nesmith completed the first quarter scoring with a man-up goal on a pass from behind the cage from Doherty.
Goals by Marks, Doherty and Radin put Marist up 9-0 with 10:48 left on the clock in the second quarter.
After the Hawks got on the board with their first goal at the 8:39 mark, Doherty scored his second of the quarter, on an assist from Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) to make the score 10-1 with 5:13 left before halftime.
St. Joseph’s scored the final three goals of the quarter to pull within 10-4 at the midway point.
Marks got the Red Foxes’ offense rolling again with a goal just 91 seconds into the third quarter, converting a feed from Nesmith.
Osborn then extended the lead to 12-4 with an unassisted tally at the 6:46 mark of the third quarter. He received a pass before making several quick moves, with his stick and the ball outstretched, to get around his defender and create an open shot, which he buried to the goalie’s left.
Radin and Rice traded goals with Saint Joseph’s the rest of the way to provide the final margin.
Marist will finish the regular season on Saturday at Manhattan. The game time on Saturday has been changed to 5 p.m. The Red Foxes will be looking to complete a perfect 6-0 season in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play and win the Regular Season Championship outright.
