EDISON, N.J. – The Marist men’s lacrosse team swept the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards on Monday, as announced by the league. Senior attack Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was named the Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore goalie Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors and freshman attack Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) was named the Rookie of the Week.
Doherty tied a career-high with seven points on four goals and three assists Marist’s 14-11 road win over Jacksonville in a battle of the final unbeaten teams in the MAAC. He also grabbed a season-high four ground balls. Doherty scored 1:45 into the third quarter to give the Red Foxes their first lead at 6-5, and they never trailed after that. In fact, all three of Doherty’s third quarter points, two goals and an assist, came with the score tied and gave Marist the lead. He registered six of his seven points in the second half, including having a hand in all three of Marist’s goals in the fourth quarter.
Scarcello made a career-high 13 saves in Marist’s victory over Jacksonville. He made at least three saves in each quarter, including four in the first quarter. He never allowed more than three goals in a quarter, holding Jacksonville to just two in the first quarter. Scarcello also collected two ground balls and led a Marist defense that was a near-perfect 20-22 in clears, the Red Foxes’ third straight game with at least 20 clears.
Radin scored another two goals in Marist’s big 14-11 win over Jacksonville in a battle of the final unbeaten teams in the MAAC. He took five shots and scooped up three ground balls. Radin scored goals in each of the second and third quarters. His goal in the second period, an unassisted tally, brought the Red Foxes even at four after trailing for most of the first half. His third quarter score was Marist’s sixth of the quarter and provided the Red Foxes with some insurance at 10-8.
It is the third Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week award of the season for both Doherty and Scarcello and the fourth Rookie of the Week award for Radin. Overall, the Red Foxes have now won 13 MAAC weekly honors in the nine weeks that they have had games. Additionally, Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) has earned two Offensive Player of the Week awards and junior midfielder Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) was also named Offensive Player of the Week once. While Marist has won two awards in a week on three separate occasions this year, this is the first time the Red Foxes have won all three.
The Red Foxes return home next Saturday with the opportunity to clinch the MAAC Regular Season Championship when they take on Siena in a 1 p.m. game at Tenney Stadium. It is Marist’s Alumni Gaame and the team will also celebrate its 13 seniors with a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
