POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s tennis team easily won a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) matches on Sunday at the Marist Tennis Pavilion. The Red Foxes (12-3, 3-0 MAAC), who were also celebrating Senior Day, did not drop a set all day in defeating both Loyola and Rider by 7-0 scores.
FIRST MATCH: MARIST 7 – LOYOLA 0
Marist opened its first match with a sweep of the three doubles matches. Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) won easily 8-1 at third doubles to start things off. The Norwegian duo of Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) and Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) also coasted at second doubles, 8-2. Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) and Billy Bishop (Houston, Texas) won by the same score at first doubles to complete the sweep.
In singles’ action, the Red Foxes did not allow the Greyhounds to win more than two games in any set. Van Eck and Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) both won by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores at third and fourth singles, respectively.
Bjerke only dropped two games himself, winning at fifth singles by a 6-0, 6-2 score.
Rossi (6-2, 6-1), Klassen (6-2, 6-2) and Joe Motta (Staten Island, N.Y.) (6-2, 6-1) all also won handedly at first, second and sixth singles, respectively.
SECOND MATCH: MARIST 7 – RIDER 0
Marist again coasted to an easy win as they swept doubles, only dropping four points total, and not allowing an opponent to win more than one game in any singles’ set.
Bishop again won at the top doubles’ position, this time teaming up with Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) for an 8-3 win. Nagelstad and Bjerke won their second doubles’ match of the day, improving by a point with an 8-1 win and Jacob Solly (Sydney Australia) and Motta swept their opponents at third doubles, 8-0.
The Red Foxes rested their top four singles’ players against Rider, but still coasted in singles. Four individuals – Bjerke (second singles), Nagelstad (third), Giudici (fourth) and Solly (fifth) – all swept their opponents for easy 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Motta nearly had a golden set in his second set, taking a 5-0 lead at sixth singles before his opponent could win his first point. Motta went on to win 6-1, 6-1.
Dube completed the victory, moving up four spots to the top singles’ position and beating his adversary with ease, 6-1, 6-0.
“I think that we are peaking at the right time because we are getting contributions from the entire team, especially our doubles,” Head Coach Tim Smith said. “In the next week we play the three other teams that should qualify for the MAAC Tournament so I will let you know then if I am right.”
Marist concludes its extended homestand a perfect 7-0 at the Marist Tennis Pavilion. The Red Foxes will close out their regular season with three MAAC matches this week starting on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. match at Fairfield in a rematch of the 2012 MAAC Championship match, which the Stags won 4-3. Marist will then return home to host Saint Peter’s on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before playing its regular season finale at Niagara at noon on Saturday.
