POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist football program has named four captains for the 2013 season: quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.), senior safety Tyler Ramsey (Southbridge, Mass.), senior free safety Nick Kaszei (Brook Park, Ohio) and senior linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.).
Looney, Kaszei and Sakowski are all heading into the fourth seasons in the program, while Ramsey is entering his fifth. Looney and Ramsey were elected captains for the second straight year, while Kaszei and Sakowski will serve in this role for the first time.
“I’m very happy to see Chuckie, Tyler, Nick and Paul elected by their peers to serve as captains this year,” said Head Coach Jim Parady, who is entering his 22nd season. “I'm confident that they will lay the foundation for a successful season with their leadership on and off the field.”
Last year, Looney became just the second true junior in Coach Parady’s tenure to be named captain. He responded by setting a single-season record for touchdown passes with 18. He enters his senior season with 29 career touchdown passes, which is tied for first all-time in program history with James Luft. Looney finished last season fifth in the Football Championship Subdivision ranks in passer rating.
Ramsey was limited to one game last season due to injury, but is returning for a fifth season. He was named Honorable Mention All-Pioneer Football League (PFL) as a linebacker in 2010, and Second Team All-PFL as a safety in 2011. Ramsey is the only player in program history to be a four-time selection to the PFL Academic Honor Roll, and was named Second Team PFL All-Academic in 2010.
Kaszei has been a significant contributor at the free safety position for the last three years, and started all 11 games at the position as a junior. He has appeared in all 33 of Marist’s games from 2010-12, and has career totals of 139 tackles and six interceptions. Last season, he was tied for the team lead in both pass break-ups (six) and fumble recoveries (two) as he was named Honorable Mention All-PFL.
Sakowski has started all 22 of Marist’s games the last two seasons at middle linebacker, and was named Honorable Mention All-PFL both years. He finished third on the team with 61 tackles in 2011, and was second with 71 in 2012. In his career, he has totaled three interceptions, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and four pass break-ups.
The Marist football team is currently in its second week of Spring Practice. The Red Foxes will hold their annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 27 at 6 p.m.
