Men's Tennis Defeats Siena 5-2 In MAAC Opener
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s tennis team open conference play with a 5-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win over Siena on Tuesday afternoon at the Marist Tennis Pavilion.
The Red Foxes (9-3) swept the doubles point as all three pairings cruised to easy wins. Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) and Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) took the top spot by an 8-2 score. Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) won 8-3 at second doubles and Billy Bishop (Houston, Texas) and Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) won 8-2 at third.
Rossi kept the winning going with a 6-2, 6-1 straight set victory at first singles.
Bjerke had a bit more of a battle at fourth singles, having to go to a tiebreaker in the first set before coming away with a 7-6(2), 6-3 win.
Jacob Solly (Sydney, Australia) and Joe Motta (Staten Island, N.Y.) battled hard in the Red Foxes’ two losses on the day, each taking their opponent to a third set. Solly fell at fifth singles 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 and Motta was defeated 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
“Siena competed well and our doubles teams took care of business,” Marist Head Coach Tim Smith said. “We are most pleased to start MAAC play in a winning fashion and look forward to our matches this weekend.”
The Red Foxes step back out of conference play when they host NJIT at the Marist Tennis Pavilion on Saturday at 12:30. They will then host a MAAC doubleheader on Sunday, playing Loyola at 10 a.m. before taking on Rider at 2 p.m. The men’s and women’s team will have the Senior Day ceremony prior to the 10 a.m. match.
