EDISON, N.J. – Senior goaltender Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) of the Marist water polo teams has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday. The award recognizes her play in the Red Foxes’ six games this past weekend.
Thomas had her best weekend of the season, making 53 saves, including three double digit performances, with a 5.14 goals against average and .663 save percentage, in leading Marist to a 5-1 weekend. She started things off with a 15-save performance in a thrilling 8-7 sudden-death overtime victory over Brown in their home pool. She made two incredible saves in the overtime periods, including one on a five-meter penalty shot and one in the sudden death session. Getting back into MAAC play, Thomas made four saves and five steals in three quarters while only giving up two goals. She topped that performance with five saves against Villanova while not giving up a single goal in three quarters. She made 14 saves and three steals in a 10-4 victory over St. Francis before topping off the weekend with an 11 save performance in a great 8-7 win over Iona in the Gaels’ home pool.
This is the third award of the season for both Thomas and the Red Foxes as she earned the same award earlier this season on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19. She also earned Defensive Player of the Week five times last season, leading to her Co-Defensive Player of the Year honor and All-MAAC Second Team selection.
Marist (21-10, 7-1 MAAC) will next play on Saturday, April 13 at St. Francis. The Red Foxes will play VMI at 11:30 a.m. and Siena at 4 p.m. The regular season will conclude the following day at Wagner where Marist will play Villanova and the Seahawks.
