EDISON, N.J. – Senior goalie Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman attack Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) were honored by the MAAC in the conference’s weekly award announcement on Monday as the Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week

Casiano had a stellar week of play for the Red Foxes in a pair of MAAC contests. On Wednesday, April 3 at Fairfield, she held the Stags to just four second half goals, as her offensive teammates made a furious comeback to notch a game-tying goal late in the period. On Saturday at Siena, the senior picked up her game even more as she turned aside 12 shots by the Saints on her way to back-stopping Marist’s lowest goals against performance since April of 2009. A key stat in Marist holding Siena to just four goals was its denial of seven free-position shots for the Saints; Casiano was a leading factor in that ratio as she made four direct saves. For the week, she posted a 6.50 goals against average and .552 save percentage, to go along with five ground balls.

Gionta had her finest week of play in her young career as in back-to-back games she registered three points at Fairfield and at Siena. Versus the Stags on Wednesday, she connected on two goals, including the game-tying tally with 34 seconds remaining. Gionta started her playmaking much earlier on Saturday versus the Saints, as she collected two first half assists, including Kirsten Viscount’s goal just 84 seconds into the game. For the week, she scored three goals, in addition to three assists for six total points.

These are the first two individual weekly honors for either player, as well as the first two for the Women’s Lacrosse program this spring.

The Red Foxes, winners of four of their past five games, will be back in action on Wednesday, April 10 with a 4 p.m. matchup at home versus Iona.
