Marist Women Breaks Two Relay Records At Colonial Relays
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A pair of 10-year-old relay school records were shattered on Saturday afternoon, highlighting a strong weekend of competition for the Marist College women’s track team at the Colonial Relays, held Friday and Saturday at the College of William and Mary.
The team of Kathryn Sheehan, Christine Coughlin, Rebecca Denise and Kristen Traub placed third overall in the 6,000-meter (4x1500) relay. Their time of 19:17.19 bested the 2003 mark of 19:40.30 by more than 23 seconds. Earlier in the afternoon, the distance medley relay team of Nicki Nesi, Colleen Meenan, Kristen Traub and Erin Thompson placed ninth in 12:24.85, eclipsing the 2003 mark of 12:32.22.
In the 6,000-meter relay, Sheehan led off with a split of 4:39.86, handing off in the lead. “Kathryn ran a phenomenal leg, a perfectly executed race,’’ Marist Director of Track Pete Colaizzo said. Coughlin (4:58), Denise (4:54) and Traub (4:44) finished the job that Sheehan started.
For Traub, it was her second school record in a matter of hours. In the distance medley relay, she had an 800-meter split of 2:15.9. And last week at the Stanford Invitational, Traub set a school record and qualified for the USA Junior Championships in the 1,500. “Kristen’s double was very impressive,’’ Colaizzo said. “She has had an excellent start to her outdoor season.
On Friday night, senior Katie Messina notched a personal-best time of 17:37.50 in the championship division of the 5,000-meter run, placing 35th. Her previous best, set during the 2013 indoor season, was 15 seconds slower. “Katie ran a great race in a national-caliber field,’’ Colaizzo said. “She raced with patience and toughness.’’
The women’s track team returns to action next weekend, at both the Bucknell Bison Invitational at Lewisburg, Pa., and the Metropolitan Championships in Mahwah, N.J.
