The Marist Softball team will be in action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders; a road twinbill on Saturday and the team’s 2013 home opener on Sunday. The Red Foxes begin their doubleheader action at Seton Hall on Saturday with the first pitch of Game One slated for 12p.m. On Sunday, Marist will open MAAC play against Fairfield in a matchup of the conference’s top two preseason teams at the Softball Park at Gartland Field. The first game is scheduled for a 1p.m. first pitch.

Scouting the Pirates

Seton Hall comes into Saturday’s matchup with an 11-18 overall record and a 1-7 mark in Big East play.

Offensively, Seton Hall is led by Brittany Hammer, who has a team-best .340 batting average.  Yasmin Harrell (.330) and Danielle Destaso (.322) are the two other Pirates with batting averages over .320. Destaso leads the team in power production with five home runs and 20 RBIs.

In the circle, Destaso (3.30 ERA, 97 strikeouts, 108.1 innings pitched) and Jen Metzger (7.81 ERA, 31 strikeouts, 40.1 innings pitched) lead the pitching staff.

This will be the first regular season meeting between the Pirates and Red Foxes since April 9, 2009 when Seton Hall swept a doubleheader in Poughkeepsie. Current Marist assistant coach Melissa Giordano led the Red Foxes on that day with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate with a home run and three runs scored.

Scouting the Stags

Fairfield comes into Sunday’s match up with a 12-12 overall record and 1-1 mark in the MAAC.  Fairfield, the preseason MAAC favorite, opened conference play with a split versus Iona on March 30. In the first game, the Stags were victorious 3-2, while the Gaels took the second game 6-2.

Offensively, Lauren Liseth leads the Stags in nearly all categories, including a .458 batting average, .614 on-base percentage, six home runs and 26 RBIs.  Mikayla Shumate (.340) and Lauren Filicia (.303) round out Fairfield hitters with batting averages over .300.

In the circle, Rae Bell (1.72 ERA, 27 strikeouts, and 69 innings pitched), Lauren Falkanger (3.68 ERA, 23 strikeouts, 45.2 innings pitched), and Rebecca Trott (3.83 ERA, 43 strikeouts, 53 innings pitched) have split time for the Stags.

Last year, Fairfield and Marist split their conference-opening doubleheader on April 7 at Fairfield with the Red Foxes winning Game One 4-3 and the Stags taking Game Two 5-4.
