POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s lacrosse team exploded offensively for a 23-5 win against VMI Saturday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game at Tenney Stadium. Marist’s 23 goals are tied for the most goals scored in NCAA men’s lacrosse this season.

15 different players registered at least one point on the day and Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) led the way with eight points on three goals and five assists. Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.), wearing the symbolic 34 jersey, found the back of the net a game-high four times, while Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) picked up a hat trick with three goals. Freshman Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) also contributed four points on two 2 goals and 2 assists. Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.), Craig Goodermote (Holtsville, N.Y.), Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Michael Linehan (Rye, N.Y.) combined for six saves in net. The Red Foxes outshot VMI 65-26 and went 23-31 in face-offs.

Rice opened the scoring for the Red Foxes (7-1, 3-0 MAAC) off a nice pass from Radin, and less than a minute later scored another beautiful unassisted goal off of a VMI (0-9, 0-3 MAAC) turnover. After goals from seniors Jake Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.), Rice completed the hat trick with a bullet past the goalie to give Marist a 5-0 advantage.

Marist ended the quarter leading VMI 6-0, with Rice having a hand on five of those goals.

Herman scored two of his four goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter to extend the lead to 8-0. After goals from Doherty and Nesmith, Herman completed his hat trick with just under four minutes left in the quarter.

The half would end with Marist leading 12-0 as VMI was not able to attempt a shot in the second quarter.

Marist picked up right where they left off scoring just four minutes into the quarter off a shot from Nesmith.  Eleven seconds later senior Shane Jaeger (Ellicott City, Md.) scored his first career goal.

VMI finally worked its way onto the board with a goal at the 9:33 mark of the of the third quarter.

Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.), Newsmith and Herman would add goals to bring the Red Foxes’ lead to  17-1 with 6:10 left in the third period.

Vin Chiodo (Garden City, N.J.) and Radin scored to close out the period, and give Marist a 19-2 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw three more Red Foxes register their first career points. A minute and a half into the quarter freshman Nick Papayanakos (Manlius, N.Y.) tallied his first career goal with a beautiful shot ripped high under the crossbar.  After trading goals, freshman defender Derek Sganga (Manorville, N.Y.) ran coast to coast and put a shot past the VMI goalkeeper for his first career point. After another goal from VMI, junior Patrick Fermo (Red Bank, N.J.) closed out the scoring for Marist with his first career goal. VMI would score once more, bringing the final score to 23-5.
