After a weekend of tournament action in San Diego, California, the Marist softball team will participate in a pair of single mid-week contests in Utah. Beginning on Tuesday, March 19, the Red Foxes will play at BYU and Utah Valley on back-to-back days. Tuesday night's 8 p.m. EST (6 p.m. MST) contest will be telecast nationally on BYUtv.
Scouting the Cougars: BYU comes into Tuesday's matchup with a 9-15 overall record, including a 2-2 showing at the USF Under Armour Showcase in its most recent action on the weekend of March 7-9. A common opponent for Marist and BYU this season has been UNLV, whom the Cougars beat 5-3 and the Red Foxes fell to 1-0.
Offensively, BYU is led by JC Clayton, who has team-best .430 batting average. Gordy Bravo (.403) and Alex Shamo-Hudson (.365) are the other two Cougars with batting averages over .333. Katie Manuma is the team's leading power threat with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 24 games played.
In the circle, Tori Almond (3.12 ERA, 55 strikeouts, 49.1 innings pitched) and Hannah Howell (3.78 ERA, 62 strikeouts, 83.1 innings) lead the staff.
Scouting the Wolverines: UVU heads into Wednesday's game with a 13-9 overall record and are coming off of a 7-1 showing at the Rebel Spring Games. In Kissimmee, the Wolverines played an assortment of teams, including two MAAC schools in Saint Peter's and Rider, whom they beat 12-3 and 5-4, respectively.
Utah Valley and Marist met last year in Greensboro, N.C. at the North Carolina A&T Tournament on Feb. 25 with the Wolverines coming out on top by a 6-3 margin.
Offensively, UVU is led by Krystin Jachim and Amanda Robinson, who have posted .397 and .391 respective batting averages. Dynasty Lauvai heads up the Wolverines' power department with team-highs in home runs (3) and RBIs (15).
