EDISON, N.J. - For the second consecutive week, Marist men's lacrosse senior attack man Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Offensive Player of the Week.
Doherty had his second five-point performance of the season, scoring three goals and assisting on two others while taking a game-high 11 shots, in Marist's 11-8 victory over Detroit in its MAAC opener on Saturday. It is the fourth time in five games this season that Doherty scored at least three goals in a game. Wearing #34 to honor the memory of former teammate Eddie Coombs, Doherty had a hand in each of Marist's three goals as the Red Foxes overcame a sloppy start and a 3-1 deficit early in the second quarter. He scored each of the first two goals for Marist and assisted on the third. He completed the hat trick early in the third quarter, part of a 4-0 run that put the Red Foxes up for good. Doherty put eight of his 11 shots on net and also scooped up two ground balls and caused a Detroit turnover.
It is the third career weekly award for Doherty and seventh of the season for the Red Foxes. Senior attack man Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) was named Offensive Player of the Week after his three goal, two assist performance in the season-opener versus Stony Brook. Junior midfielder Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) also earned Offensive Player of the Week after his six point effort against Sacred Heart. Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) and freshman Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y) swept Defensive Player and Rookie two weeks ago and Doherty and Scarcello both won Offensive and Defensive Players last week.
Marist (5-0, 1-0 MAAC) play on the road Monday night at 12th-ranked Duke. The Red Foxes are looking to extend their best start to a season since beginning 10-0 in 1986.
