Water Polo Wins Twice, Moves To 4-0 On West Coast Trip
REDLANDS, Calif. - For the second straight day, the Marist water polo team swept a pair of games on Saturday at the Lancer Invite. The Red Foxes came from behind to beat Whittier by an 8-7 score before defeating Azuza Pacific 13-6 to go 4-0 in the tournament to start their west coast trip.
In the opener against Whittier, Marist (11-5) trailed 2-1 after the first quarter and 4-2 at halftime, but bounced back with six unanswered goals in the third quarter before holding off a late Whittier charge in the final period.
Seven different Red Foxes scored in the game, and Anna-Lena Hathaway (Pasadena, Calif.) led the way with four points on a goal and three assists. Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) scored a team-high two goals and added an assist while Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) had a goal and two assists. Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pa.) finished with a goal, an assist and two field blocks. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) made three saves and had two steals in goal for Marist.
Against Azuza Pacific, Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) scored four goals and had four steals and Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) added three goals and two assists as the Red Foxes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and led the rest of the way. Hathaway again had four points on a goal and three assists. Ellie Hoffman (Pasadena, Calif.) scored twice and made three steals and a field block defensively. Thomas played the first three quarters in net, making four saves. Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) played the final period and made one save.
Marist continues its spring break trip with two more games on Sunday in Santa Barbara. The Red Foxes will play both Santa Barbara (1:30 p.m.) and Bakersfield (6:45 p.m.).
