Offense Leads Water Polo To Friday Sweep In California
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Marist water polo team poured in 23 goals on Friday, including four apiece from Ellie Hoffman (Pasadena, Calif.), Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) and Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), to sweep a pair of games at the Lancer Invite. The Red Foxes (9-5) defeated Chapman 9-3 and George Washington 14-8.
In the first game against Chapman, Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.), Rinker and Hoffman all scored two goals. Rinker and Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) both scored in the final minute of the first half to break a 2-2 tie and give the Red Foxes the lead for good. Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) also scored and Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) made 10 saves in goal.
Against George Washington in the nightcap, Jessica Hamby scored four goals and Anna-Lena Hathaway (Pasadena, Calif.), Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), Hoffman and Rinker all found the back of the net twice. Thomas made seven more saves in the Marist net. The Red Foxes scored five goals in the second quarter, including two each from Jessica Hamby and Hathaway, to break out to a, 8-2 lead at the midway point.
Marist finishes up the Lancer Invite on Saturday with two more games. The Red Foxes will play Whittier at 1:20 p.m. before taking on Azusa Pacific at 8 p.m.
