EDISON, N.J. - The Marist men's lacrosse team had two more players earn weekly awards as sophomore goalie Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) and freshman attack Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) were named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The awards recognize their performances at Lafayette last Saturday.
Scarcello moved to 3-0 as a starter in 2013 by holding Lafayette to just five goals over the course of 60 minutes in cage as Marist won 8-5 in its first road game of the season. He held a powerful Lafayette offense scoreless for a span of 22 minutes in the first half. The five goals allowed is lowest total of the 2013 season for any MAAC school. He made seven saves and grabbed three ground balls while also leading the Marist that cleared the ball successfully on all but one clear for entire day.
Radin led the Marist offense with two goals on Saturday while tying for the team lead with seven shots. It was his second consecutive multi-goal game. He also scooped up a ground ball and caused a Lafayette turnover. Radin scored the Red Foxes' first goal of the game to help ignite the offense for four goals in the second quarter after being held scoreless in the first. He also scored the first goal of the second half in transition to provide insurance and keep momentum with the Red Foxes.
These are the first career awards for both Scarcello and Radin and the fourth in the first three weeks of the season for the Red Foxes. Senior attack man Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) was named Offensive Player of the Week after his three goal, two assist performance in the season-opener versus Stony Brook. Junior midfielder Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) also earned Offensive Player of the Week after his six point effort against Sacred Heart.
Marist, who is receiving votes in both national polls and sitting just outside the top-20, stays on the road this weekend, traveling to Baltimore on Friday to take on Towson in a 7 p.m. game.
