EASTON, Pa. - Seven different players scored as the Marist men's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-5 win at Lafayette on Saturday.
Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes offense with three points on a goal and two assists. Freshman Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) had two goals and Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.), Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) and Vin Chiodo (Garden City, N.Y.) all added single goals. Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) made seven saves in goal for his third win and Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) went 13-16 from the face-off X and scooped up a game-high five ground balls.
It took a while for Marist (3-0) to get the offense going as Lafayette (2-3) led 1-0 after the first quarter.
Radin notched his first goal 3:30 into the second quarter to knot the score at one. After several scoreless minutes Osborn and Chiodo tallied goals 49 seconds apart to give Marist a 3-1 lead. It was the first career goal for Chiodo, a senior.
Lafayette scored two goals, sandwiched around a Doherty score on an assist from Rice, to bring the score to 4-3 at halftime.
Radin and Herman scored twice in the first five minutes of the third quarter to bring Marist's advantage to 6-3. Patrick Eaker (Redding, Conn.) and Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) both registered assists on the goals.
The Leopards scored in the final 90 seconds of the quarter to cut the Red Foxes' lead to 6-4, but Nesmith brought the advantage back up to three just 41 seconds into the fourth period with an unassisted score.
Rice scored an insurance goal with 18 seconds left, on a man-up situation, to seal the win.
Marist stays on the road, traveling to Baltimore on Friday to take on Towson in a 7 p.m. game.
