NEW YORK - Graduate student William Griffin (Columbia, Conn.) and sophomore David Marthy (Latham, N.Y.) of Marist each qualified for the IC4A Championships by virtue of their performances in the 3,000 and 800 meters, respectively, at Friday night's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Armory.
Griffin placed second in the 3,000 in 8:25.46, and Marthy was fifth in the 800 in a personal-best time of 1:54.50.
Three more Red Foxes earned scoring positions. Senior Arquimedes DelaCruz (Wantagh, N.Y.) placed third in the 3,000 meters, and was less than three seconds behind Griffin. Junior Ken Walshak (Babylon, N.Y.) took fifth in the 5,000. Freshman Alex Cunningham (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) placed sixth in the preliminaries to qualify for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, where he also took sixth.
Three other Red Foxes claimed personal bests. In the mile, junior Nick Salek (Morris Plains, N.J.) enjoyed his best time by nearly seven seconds. A pair of Red Foxes turned in their best times in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash: sophomore Tyler Schwarz (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior Darren Bushey (Pittsfield, Mass.).
As a team, Marist finished fifth with 29 points.
