EDISON, N.J. - Marist water polo senior goalkeeper Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week. The award recognizes Thomas' efforts this past weekend at the Triton Invite, hosted by UC-San Diego, where she led the Red Foxes to a 2-2 record.
Thomas started right off where she left from last year's Co-Defensive Player of the Year effort, making 32 saves while playing all but two quarters of Marist's four games against some of the best teams in the country. She started off the weekend by making seven saves and three steals against #5 Arizona State before making four saves against #15 Loyola Marymount while only playing for the first half. In the Red Foxes' first win of the season over Sonoma State, Thomas stopped nine shots and made two steals while only allowing two goals for an .818 save percentage. She also registered her first assist of the season. Against Santa Clara in the weekend finale, an 8-7 win for Marist, Thomas tied her season-high with 12 saves and adding another two steals which tied for the team-high.
This is the first weekly award of the season for Thomas and the Red Foxes. She earned Defensive Player of the Week five times last season, leading to her Co-Defensive Player of the Year honor and All-MAAC Second Team selection.
Marist is back in action next weekend at the Bucknell Bison Invite. The Red Foxes will play Brown and Princeton on Saturday as well as George Washington and Bucknell on Sunday.
