Leanne Ockenden Leads Womenís Basketball To 63-40 Win At Iona
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) was 4-6 from beyond the three-point arc, scoring a team-high 16 points in leading the Marist women's basketball team to a 63-40 victory over Iona Thursday evening in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game.
Ockenden also grabbed four rebounds, made three steals and added a block on the defensive end. Elizabeth Beynnon (Burlington, Vt.) finished with 15 points, going 6-10 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) was also in double figures with 10 points while collecting a team-high six boards. Kristine Best (Commack, N.Y.) had her second-highest scoring output of the season, going 4-6 from the floor for eight points. Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H) scored five points off the bench while tying her career-high with three rebounds.
Marist (16-6, 11-0 MAAC) held Iona (11-11, 6-5 MAAC) without a made field goal until the 14:47 mark of the first half, jumping out to an early 10-1 lead. Beynnon and Dulin each hit layups to start the run and, after an Iona free throw, Ockenden's hit the first of her three-pointers. Dulin closed the run by hitting one of two from the free throw line and driving for another layup.
Iona used a 13-4 run to come back and tie the score at 14 with 9:05 left, but Marist held the Gaels to just four points for the remainder of the half, while putting in 16 themselves to take a 30-18 lead at the midway point.
Beynnon started the extended run with a three-pointer of her own. Ockenden then hit a layup and Best hit a jumper. Beynnon hit two free throws and Emma O'Connor hit one of two from the charity stripe to bring the lead to 24-17. Ockenden then hit back-to-back treys in a matter of 38 seconds bring the lead to 30-17 and force Iona to call its third timeout of the half.
After the Gaels scored the first four points of the second half, the Red Foxes responded with a 12-0 run of their own to bring their lead to 20 points at 42-22. Best started the streak with a jumper before O'Connor found Ockenden on a backdoor cut for an easy layup. Best then found Beynnon on a 2-on-1 fast break for a layup and Ockenden and Kristina Danella (Manalapan, N.J.) hit consecutive three-pointers to close out the run with 14:15 left to play.
The rest of way, Marist did not allow Iona to get any closer than 16 points.
The Red Foxes conclude their three-game road swing with a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday.
Notes - Iona had been averaging 63.1 points per game, the most in the MAAC and the 40 points was the second lowest point total for the Gaels this season... Marist is now 13-0 this season when scoring at least 60 points... The Red Foxes have won 11 straight games, the 11th time they have gone on a winning streak of 10 games or more under Brian Giorgis... Ockenden has now hit 129 three-pointers in her career, just one behind Nancy Holbrook for sixth all-time in Marist history.
