Men's Basketball Heads To New Rochelle To Battle Iona On Thursday

The Marist men's basketball team heads to New Rochelle on Thursday in search of revenge versus Iona following a four-point loss in Poughkeepsie on Jan. 10. The Red Foxes (5-18, 2-10 MAAC) and Gaels (14-9, 8-4 MAAC) tip off at 7:00 p.m.

This will be the 54th-matchup between Marist and Iona.
The Red Foxes are 15-38 all-time versus the Gaels.

Red Foxes & Gaels, January 10 vs. Iona ...
Marist suffered an 86-82 loss to Iona at McCann Arena.

In a game that included seven lead changes and six ties, the host Red Foxes got off to a fast start as they jumped out to seven point lead in just under seven minutes of play.

After opening the second half with some more trading of baskets, Marist would slowly pull away on the strength of 11 points by Lewis during a 5:11 stretch of play from 17:07 to 11:54.

Up by a game-high 11 points at 11:54 by a 66-55 score, Marist would fall prey to Iona's outside shooting game to the tune of a 13-0 run over a span of 2:07 to take the lead.

After a layup by Price gave Marist a 74-72 lead with 6:34 left, Iona's Curtis Dennis answered with a three-pointer to give the Gaels the lead for good with 6:04 remaining.

Devin Price led all scorers with 27 points. Price tied his career high with six three-pointers and added four assists and two rebounds. Chavaughn Lewis had 23 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Marist hit a season-high 13 three-pointers in 21 attempts (.619) and shot 30-for-57 (.526) from the field.

In a close throughout the final 25 minutes, Chavaughn Lewis led Marist with a game-high 24 points. He added five steals, five assists, four rebounds and a blocked shot. Lewis tied his career high in steals and assists, and scored over 20 for the third consecutive game and seventh time this season.

Adam Kemp finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Kemp shot 5-for-6 from the field.

The visitors jumped out to an early 16-6 lead over the first 6:23 of play as the Broncs opened shooting 6-of-9 from the field.

From 12:26 to 11:09, freshman Eric Truog went on an individual 5-0 run to cut the double-digit deficit down to five.

After Rider pulled away to a nine-point margin at 22-13 with 7:47 left in the first half the Red Foxes went on a 10-0 run over the next 2:39. Lewis had a hand in all 10 points as he assisted on Kemp's dunk at 7:27 before scoring the next eight points himself via two three-pointers and a pair of made free throws.

In the second half, Marist took its first and only lead of the period at 38-37 following an Isaiah Morton three-pointer at 17:07.

The visitors took the lead for good when Jonathan Thompson knocked down a three 40 seconds later.

The game was close throughout the rest of the half, including three ties, but unfortunately for the Red Foxes Rider was able to make timely shots and get second chances off of the offense glass. In the half, the Broncs were able to pull down six offensive rebounds.

Scouting the Gaels ...

Iona comes into Thursday night's matchup on a two-game losing streak as the Gaels fell by three points in back-to-back contests in Western New York; at Niagara 93-90 and at Canisius 77-74. Overall with an 8-4 MAAC record, the Gaels are in a three-way tie for second behind first-place Niagara.

Individually, they are led in scoring by a trio of double-digit scorers. MAAC scoring leader Lamont Jones averages 21.9 points per game, while shooting a league-best 89.2 percent from the foul line. Sean Armand (17.7 ppg, 3.7 3ptm/g) and David Laury (14.1 ppg, 11.2 rpg) round out the top scorers for Iona.
