EDISON, N.J. -- The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has honored Marist men's tennis senior Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) as its male student-athlete of the week.
Van Eck has had a strong 2012-13 campaign for the Marist men's tennis team. The senior co-captain from The Netherlands is 13-6 in single's action after going a perfect 3-0 last week in a tournament at Army. Van Eck has also added six wins in doubles' action, typically playing against the opponents' top players. He has been named to three All-MAAC teams in his career, including two First Team selections as a sophomore in 2011 and a Second Team doubles' selection last season. In his three-plus seasons, he has amassed 74 total wins for the Red Foxes.
Off of the tennis court, Van Eck excels in the classroom having twice been named to the MAAC All-Academic Team as an Accounting major and Business minor.
The MAAC chooses its male and female honorees on a rotational basis among the conference's 10 schools. Bowie is the fourth Red Fox to be honored this year. Senior Arquimedes DelaCruz (Wantagh, N.Y.) of cross country/track & field was honored on Sept. 17, senior Chelsea Botta (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was honored on Oct. 22 and junior Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) of men's basketball on Nov. 27.
The Red Foxes do not return to the court until final weekend of February for a dual match at Army on Feb. 24. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
