JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Marist women's basketball team had nine players score Sunday, pulling away for a 68-49 win over Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game.
Kristina Danella (Manalapan, N.J.) and Sydney Coffey (New Hope, Minn.) tied for the team-high honors in scoring as both came off the bench to score 13 points. Danella was 8-10 from the free throw line while Coffey was 4-7 from the field. Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was also in double figures with 12 points. Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished with nine points while registering five steals on the defensive end, tying her career-high for the fourth time this season. Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) had seven points and a team-high eight rebounds, tying her own personal best.
The Red Foxes (15-6, 10-0 MAAC) used a 10-1 run in the first half - holding Saint Peter's (1-20, 1-9 MAAC) without a field goal for a span of 8:04 - to break a tie and open a 14-5 lead at the 11:05 mark. Kristine Best (Commack, N.Y.) started the run with a deep jumper. O'Connor then scored three consecutive points on a layup and a 1-2 trip to the free throw line. Coffey and Danella hit back-to-back baskets before Coffey finished off the run with a free throw.
The Peacocks pulled to within four points at 24-20 with 3:06 remaining, but Marist answered with a 6-0 run to close the half. Ockenden hit a three-pointer, Dulin made one out of two free throws and O'Connor made a jumper to give the Red Foxes a 30-20 lead at halftime.
Both teams traded baskets for the first 12 minutes of the second half until a three-pointer by Coffey at the 8:09 mark put Marist ahead 48-36 and kick-started the offense.
Danella and Coffey combined to score the next eight points for the Red Foxes, helping the visitors to expand their lead to 14 at 56-42. Coffey made three free throws and a layup while Danella also hit three free throws.
Beynnon and O'Connor hit consecutive layups and Danella hit four more from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
Marist stays on the road next weekend with road matchups at Iona and Siena. The Red Foxes will travel to New Rochelle to take on the Gaels at 4:30 on Thursday, part of a double-header that will also feature the Marist and Iona men's teams. Sunday's game at Siena will start at 2 p.m.
Notes - The win is the 10th in a row for the Red Foxes, making it the 11th time they have had a winning streak of 10 or more games under head coach Brian Giorgis. They have done so in every season since 2004-05 season, including two separate streaks in 2008-09 and last year.
