WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist men's tennis team entered the final day of the Army Challenge already with a 1-0 lead over Gardner Webb, having taken the doubles' point on Friday. The Red Foxes showed a lot of heart on Sunday to come away with a 4-3 victory, coming back to win two singles' matches in the deciding third set.
Senior Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) started the charge at the fourth singles' position. After dropping the first set 6-0, Van Eck stormed back and to win the final two sets 6-4 and 6-3.
Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) clinched the victory with a grueling three-set win of his own in the third slot. He took the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4). His opponent then took the second set 6-4 before Reznek recovered to take the third set 6-3.
In the fifth position, Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) remained undefeated in single's action this spring, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win.
"This was a complete team effort, led by one of our senior team captains, Joris Van Eck," Head Coach Tim Smith said. "His accomplishment to come back and win after dropping the first set 6-0 put us in a position to win. Will Reznek showed the same determination in his match at #3 to clinch the match for us."
Marist completed the weekend with a 2-1 record, defeating both Army and Gardner Webb by The Red Foxes take some time off before returning to West Point on the final weekend of February for a dual match against the Black Knights on Feb. 24. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
