Marist To Host Siena On Sunday In Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Game

The Marist men's basketball team will host the Siena Saints in a MAAC contest at the McCann Arena at 2 p.m. In a game that will be televised by Time Warner Cable Sports Channel, the Red Foxes (5-15, 2-7 MAAC) will look to get back onto the winning side of the ledger after a setback on Thursday at Fairfield.

The contest will also be the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness game, a nationwide event when coaches across the country unite for a common cause - saving lives from cancer. Coaches and their staff are encouraged to wear sneakers with their game attire while coaching.

Red Foxes & Saints, February 23, 2012 ...
Marist won a hard-fought contest over rival Siena at home by a score of 61-52. Tough defense and efficient offense down the stretch gave the Red Foxes their 12th win of season.

Chavaughn Lewis and Isaiah Morton led the Red Foxes with a combined 31 points and 10 assists.

The offense came early for Marist via the three-pointer as nine of their first 11 points were from distance. Morton found success with his first two attempts of the game to score the Red Foxes' first six points.

The Red Foxes would close out the remainder of the half on a 10-4 run to go into the locker room up 28-20.

Marist kept the game at a seven or more point margin for much of the second half, including twice reaching a 12 point lead.

With their second 12 point lead at 46-34, the Red Foxes hit an inopportune 4:44 stretch of play where they shot 0-5 with two turnovers, while the Saints shot 5-7, with three made free throws. The outcome of this span was a 14-0 run and Siena's first lead of the second half at 48-46.

Marist gathered itself and came back with a streak of its own to close the game and clinch the win. Over the final 4:47, the Red Foxes outscored Siena 15-4 overall and 9-0 in the final 1:52.

The Red Foxes hit both of their three point attempts and seven of eight free throws in the closing minutes to earn the win.

Marist fell on the road to a hot shooting Fairfield team by a score of 71-37 in a MAAC game on Thursday night.

Anell Alexis led Marist with 10 points. Alexis shot 4-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range.

Adam Kemp had six points and a team-high six rebounds.

Fairfield shot .592 from the field (29-for-49) and .500 from three-point range (11-for-22).

Fairfield jumped out to an early 11-3 lead by the 15:54 mark.

Marist quickly got back into it with a 7-0 run to tighten the game to an 11-10 score.

A 24-6 response by Fairfield over the next 8:25 broke the game open and set Marist back 35-16 at 4:54.

The hot outside shooting by the Stags continued for the remainder of the half. After 20 minutes of action, Fairfield held a 41-21 lead on the strength of 60.7 percent (17-28) field goal shooting and 50.0 percent (5-10) accuracy from three-point range.

The second half unfolded with a similar storyline as the Stags deposited 57.1 percent (12-21) of their shots from the field and 50.0 (4-8) from distance. The hosts would extend their lead to a final score of 71-37.

Scouting the Saints ...

Siena comes into Sunday's game on a three game losing streak and an overall record of 4-16, 2-7 in the MAAC.

The Saints are led by a quartet of double digits scorers, who account for 75 percent of their scoring: Rob Poole (12.8 ppg), O.D. Anosike (12.8 ppg), Rakeem Brookins (11.7 ppg) and Evan Hymes (11.6 ppg). Besides scoring Anosike leads Siena and the MAAC with 11.6 rebounds per game; his average is second nationally.
