POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team opened its 2013 season Saturday afternoon, dropping a 13-4 decision to 16th-ranked Hartwick College at McCann Natatorium.
Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Red Foxes with two goals, one coming on a five-meter penalty, while also drawing four Hartwick ejections. Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) and Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) also scored for Marist. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) made 12 saves in goal for the Red Foxes and added four steals.
Marist (0-1) got on the board first with a transition goal just 31 seconds into the game. Following a Crabtree steal on the defensive end, Anna-Lena Hathaway (Pasadena, Calif.) charged the net drawing a defender. She found an open Hamby who lobbed a shot over the Hartwick goalie and inside the far post.
Hartwick would score the next four goals however and led 4-1 after the first quarter.
Thomas came up with several big saves in the second quarter, including one on a breakaway, but the Red Foxes could not cash in on their offensive opportunities.
Marist trailed 5-1 at the midway point.
The Red Foxes finally got back on the board in the third quarter as Chavez scored a goal on a man-up situation on an assist by Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.).
Thomas made some more impressive saves in the quarter, including one on a five-meter penalty.
Despite the efforts, Marist still trailed 10-2 after three periods.
Hamby scored her second of the game on a five-meter penalty shot, after drawing the foul herself. Crabtree added a goal with 1:10 left, recovering a loose ball in front of the Hartwick goal.
The Red Foxes are not back in the pool until the weekend of Feb. 9-10 when they travel to San Diego for the Triton Invite, hosted by UC-San Diego.
