Marist Earns Wire-To-Wire Victory Over Saint Peter's

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team defeated Saint Peter's 59-48 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at McCann Arena on Saturday night. The Red Foxes never trailed in the contest.

Junior center Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) set a career high with 18 rebounds to go along with eight points and two blocks. Sophomore swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) scored a game-high 19 points to go along with nine rebounds, five steals and four assists. Lewis tied a career high in steals. Sophomore point guard Isaiah Morton (Vineland, N.J.) had 10 points, a career-high seven rebounds and three assists while playing all 40 minutes.

Marist put on a strong defensive performance. The Red Foxes held the Peacocks to .259 shooting (14-for-54) for the game, and just .111 (2-for-18) from three-point range. Marist also held a 43-30 rebounding edge.

Led by a strong all-around effort, the Red Foxes jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead by the 15:17 point of the first half. Four players registered baskets and three collected assists.

Following a tip-in by red-shirt junior Anell Alexis (Hillsborough, N.J.) at 13:05, Marist would find itself with its first double-digit lead of the game at 14-4.

Saint Peter's would cut Marist's lead down to five on three separate occasions over the next six minutes, but never closer.

With the score20-15 at 7:20, the Red Foxes would run off a 7-0 point streak with Morton adding the exclamation point with a three-pointer at 1:11.

At the half, Marist took a 27-17 advantage into the locker room. The Red Foxes outshot the Peacocks 46.2 percent (12-26) to 25.9 (7-27) from the field and 50.0 (3-6) to 0.0 (0-7) from three-point range. On the glass, Marist held a 22-15 lead in rebounds.

In the second half, Saint Peter's quickly brought the game within single digits at 27-20, but over the next 7:28, Marist would hold the Peacocks to just six points. With the defense clicking, the Red Foxes calmly notched 14 points in response to Saint Peter's 6 to turn a seven-point game into a 15-point game at 41-26.

Following a 9-1 run by Saint Peter's, the Red Foxes would come right back with a 12-4 run of their own to return to the game to a comfortable double-digit margin.

A dunk by Lewis with just a minute to go was the icing on the cake for the Red Foxes as they would send the game into the books with a 59-48 final score.

For the game, Marist outshot Saint Peter's 47.9 percent (23-48) to 25.9 (14-54) from the field and 50.0 (4-8) to 11.1 (2-18) from three-point range.

Marist improved to 5-14 overall and 2-6 in the MAAC while snapping an eight-game losing streak. Saint Peter's fell to 6-12 overall and 1-7 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes return to action on Thursday with a conference game at Fairfield. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
