Marist Falls In Up-Tempo Game To Iona, 86-82

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered an 86-82 loss to Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Thursday night in McCann Arena.

Senior Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) led all scorers with 27 points. Price tied his career high with six three-pointers and added four assists and two rebounds. Sophomore Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) had 23 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. Lewis hit all four of his three-point attempts. Sophomore Isaiah Morton (Vineland, N.J.) had 15 points and six assists, and junior Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) totaled 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Marist hit a season-high 13 three-pointers in 21 attempts (.619) and shot 30-for-57 (.526) from the field.

Iona was led by Lamont Jones, who had 26 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Sean Armand and David Laury added 19 and 14 points, respectively.

In a game that included seven lead changes and six ties, the host Red Foxes got off to a fast start as they jumped out to seven point lead in just under seven minutes of play. Four-for-four shooting from three-point range led Marist to the early 21-14 lead at 13:09. Price accounted for three of the treys, while Morton connected on the fourth off of a kick-out assist from Kemp.

The Red Foxes would eventually extend their lead to nine in the first half at 30-21 with 8:52 remaining after Price had a personal 4-0 run with a three-pointer and a made free throw on consecutive possessions.

A 17-7 run by the Gaels would flip the score back in the visitors favor with under three minutes to go.

The teams would trade to baskets down the stretch with Marist taking a slight three-point lead of 45-42 in the locker room at the half.

The Red Foxes outshot the Gaels in the first half, 55.2 percent (16-29) to 47.4 (18-38) from the field and 60.0 percent (6-10) to 38.5 (5-13) from beyond the arc.

After opening the second half with some more trading of baskets, the Red Foxes would slowly pull away on the strength of 11 individual points by Lewis during a 5:11 stretch of play from 17:07 to 11:54.

Up by a game-high 11 points at 11:54 by a 66-55 score, Marist would fall prey to Iona's dangerous outside shooting game as the Gaels answered back with a 13-0 run over a span of 2:07 to take the lead, a spurt that included two threes by Armand and five points by Jones.

After a layup by Price gave Marist a 74-72 lead with 6:34 left, Iona's Curtis Dennis answered with a three-pointer - his only three points of the game - to give the Gaels the lead for good with 6:04 remaining.

The fast-paced game would go final by a score of 86-82 in favor of the visitors.

For the game, Marist outshot Iona 52.6 percent (30-57) to 47.9 (35-73) from the field and 61.9 percent (13-21) to 40.9 (9-22) from three-point range, though the Gaels held a 37-33 advantage in rebounds, including 15 offensive boards, as well caused 16 Red Fox turnovers.

Iona is now 10-6 overall and 4-1 in MAAC play; Marist is 4-12 overall and 1-4 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday at Manhattan. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
