The Marist men's basketball team will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 31 versus the College of Charleston in its first contest since a Dec. 22 road meeting with Hartford. The Red Foxes (4-8) will host the Cougars (8-4) in a 4 p.m. game at the McCann Arena.

Marist vs. College of Charleston ...
This is the first-ever meeting between the Red Foxes and Cougars on the hardcourt.

The most recent meeting between the two schools occured on the softball diamond in 2011.

On Feb. 26, 2011, the Cougars defeated the Red Foxes in an early season non-conference matchup at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic by a score of 8-1.

Marist vs. Southern Conference ...
The Red Foxes have never faced off with a member of the Southern Conference.

With a first round win in the 2012 Old Spice Classic, Marist could have had the opportunity to meet up with perennial SoCon power, Davidson in the second round of the tournament.

About the SoCon ...
Member institutions are located in the states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The Southern Conference ranks as the fourth oldest major college athletic conference in the United States.

Only the Big Ten (1896), Missouri Valley (1907) and Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older.

The SEC and ACC were spawned from schools originally competing in the Southern Conference.

Marist vs. The Palmetto State ...
The Red Foxes have met three opponents from the state of South Carolina prior to today ...

All three matchups came as participants in early season non-conference tournaments (2-Pepsi Classic, 1-Old Spice Classic)

Charleston Southern: 0-1. Dec. 7, 1996, L, 53-51 2OT
in the Third Place game of the Pepsi Marist Classic

Clemson: 0-1. Nov. 25, 2012, L, 59-44
in the Fifth Place game of the Old Spice Classic

Coastal Carolina: 0-1 Nov. 22, 2003, L, 74-70 in the First Round of the Pepsi Marist Classic

Last Time Out ... Dec. 22 at Hartford ...
A frigid shooting performance by Marist in the first half served as the deciding factor in a road setback for the Red Foxes. Chavaughn Lewis led the Red Foxes with a game-high 16 points.

Cold shooting marred the Red Foxes' offensive effort in the first half as they only mustered a 17.6 field goal percentage (3-17). Nine converted free throws helped the team stay in the game over the opening period of play.

Shot-for-shot action would be the story of the of the second half as neither team was able to string together more than a 4-0 run until Marist went on a 10-2 run from 4:57 to 2:01 to turn a 49-35 game into a two possession, 51-45 contest.

51-45 would be the closest the Red Foxes would close the margin to over the final minutes of play as Hartford locked down defensively and allowed just a single free throw against.

Three Red Foxes scored in double figures for Marist in defeat; Adam Kemp and Manny Thomas each contributed 10 points in addition to Lewis' 16. All three players tied for the team lead with six rebounds each.

Scouting the Cougars ...
