BOSTON, Mass. - The Marist men's indoor track and field team enjoyed a solid performance in Saturday's season-opening meet, the Jay Carisella Invitational hosted by Northeastern University at Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
Graduate student William Griffin (Columbia, Conn.) finished fifth in the mile, and then came back to finish third in the 800 meters. Sophomore David Marthy (Latham, N.Y.) had the Red Foxes' best finish by coming in second in the 1,000 meters, and his time of 2:32.40 was a personal best. Sophomore Bryan Buttigieg (Massapequa, N.Y.) also had a personal best in the 1,000, as his time of 2:35.52 was good for a fifth-place finish.
Competing in his first career indoor meet, freshman Alex Cunningham (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) won his preliminary heat and finished fourth overall in the 60-meter hurdles trials, and then finished eighth in the finals. He also set a personal best in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Tyler Schwarz (Fairfield, Conn.) turned in a strong performance in the 60- and 200-meter dashes.
Marist will return to action after New Year's at the NYC Gotham Cup, which will be held at the Armory on Friday, Jan. 11.
