BALTIMORE - The Marist men's swimming and diving team earned its first 3-0 showing at the H20unds Invitational in four years on Saturday. Led by six victories, including two by junior Nick Spinella (Franklin Square, N.Y.) the Red Foxes were victorious 207-161 over Loyola, 210-145 over Iona and 211-139 over Saint Peter's to improve its 2012 record to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in MAAC action.
Marist began Saturday's action with a victory in the 200-yd freestyle relay as the "A" team of Spinella, Alex Lombardi (Branford, Conn.), Tyler Ferraro (Southbury, Conn.) and John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) swam to the win in a time of 1:25.32.
In the following event, sophomore Dylan Cummings (Midland Park, N.J.) took a second place finish in the 400-yd IM with a time of 4:11.13.
The Red Foxes earned another runner-up finish in the next event as Cummings' classmate Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) was out-touched in a neck and neck race with Saint Peter's Valerijs Lebedevs in the 100-yd butterfly. Trailing by 0.54 seconds after the first 50 yards, Ruddy and Lebedevs turned in identical 26.65 final 50s for the 50.29 to 50.83 decision.
Marist's first individual win of the day came in the 100-yd backstroke where Nick Spinella registered a 51.72 result. Later, in the afternoon session, he'd come back and sweep the backstroke events with a win in the 200-yd race at 1:53.44.
Senior Daniel Collins (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the second individual Red Fox swimmer to earn a win as he recorded a 17.62-second win in the 1650-yd freestyle with a final time of 16:40.62. Sophomore Bill Drennen (Collegeville, Pa.) gave Marist two top five finishes as he took fifth with a time of 17:17.50.
One day after a win in the 50-yd freestyle event, John Spitzer followed up his performance with a near win in the 100-yd freestyle race. Iona's Justin Grigull earned the 0.20-second victory as he held off Spitzer 47.12 to 47.32. Lombardi and Ferraro gave the Red Foxes three top five finishers with a fourth at 47.00 and a fifth at 48.26, respectively.
Marist's final swimming victory of the Invitational came in the 200-yd butterfly courtesy of Ruddy. Seeking revenge for an earlier second place finish, the sophomore out-touched Lebedevs of Saint Peter's by 0.34 seconds at 1:54.35 to 1:54.69. Seniors Stephen Miller (Downington, Pa.) and Dan Gaynor (Sonoma, Calif.) finished third and fifth respectively with times of 1:57.93 and 1:59.12.
The final race of the day, the 400-yd freestyle, was a tight battle between Iona "A" and Marist "A" that went the way of the Gaels with a 3:10.08 to 3:10.47 result.
In diving action, sophomore Jacob Baker (Shavertown, Pa.) completed a perfect two-for-two weekend as he won the 1-meter board with a 243.10 point total.
Marist will be off from regular season competition for six weeks before hosting Southern Connecticut State in a home meet on Saturday, Jan. 12.
