EDISON, N.J. - Marist women's basketball freshman guard Sydney Coffey (New Hope, Minn.) has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
Coffey made her first career start Saturday, in just her third collegiate game, and had a huge impact as she sparked Marist to a 56-45 victory over Princeton, which entered the game ranked fourth in the country amongst mid-major schools. On the defensive end, Coffey was in charge of covering 2012 All-American Niveen Rasheed and held her to just 3-17 shooting for the game and forced her into five turnovers. Offensively, Coffey scored 13 points for the Red Foxes while more than doubling her previous career-high with 31 minutes. She finished 4-7 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Her three-pointer late in the game extended Marist's lead to eight points and essentially iced the victory. She became the quickest player to start under Giorgis, enter the starting lineup in just three games. Previously, Julianne Viani started in her first game, but that came after practicing for a full year with the team after redshirting a season following a transfer.
The Red Foxes head to the U.S. Virgin Islands for Thanksgiving break to take part in the Paradise Jam tournament. The Red Foxes will face Purdue, Connecticut and Wake Forest over a three-day stretch from Thursday-Saturday.
