BUIES CREEK, N.C. - A balanced offensive attack, stout defensive performance and key plays on special teams buoyed the Marist football team to a 28-7 victory at Campbell in a Pioneer Football League (PFL) contest on Saturday.
Offensively, Marist rolled up 569 yards of total offense - 338 on the ground, 231 in the air. Defensively, Marist held Campbell to 272 yards of total offense, and senior defensive end Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.) registered three sacks. On special teams, Fede's blocked field goal in the second quarter ended a 19-play, 83-yard drive which last over 11 minutes, and sophomore Emmanuel Onakoya (Waldorf, Md.) returned the second half kickoff 46 yards to set up a Marist touchdown.
Onakoya led Marist's ground game as well with 114 yards on 15 carries, and fifth-year senior Calvin McCoy (Bronx, N.Y.) ran for 97 yards on 12 carries, including a 45-yard touchdown run on the first drive of the third quarter. Fifth-year senior wide receiver Michael Rios (Miami, Fla.) caught five passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was the 16th receiving score of Rios' career, enabling him to tie James LaMacchia for first place on Marist's all-time list. Junior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) completed 15 of 21 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns.
The three touchdown passes by Looney gave him 17 of the season, and enabled him to break Marist's single season record, which was previously set by James Luft with 16 in 2005.
Junior free safety Nick Kaszei (Brook Park, Ohio) led Marist with nine tackles, including four solo stops. Kaszei also broke up three passes. The Red Foxes had seven tackles for losses in the game.
On the sixth play of Marist's first drive, Looney found sophomore wide receiver Joe Tralli (Croton, N.Y.) for a 57-yard touchdown connection as Marist took a 7-0 lead with 9:34 left in the first quarter. The score remained that way until Looney completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to sophomore running back Max Jacques (Salem, N.H.) with 24 seconds left until halftime. That touchdown capped a 12-play, 91-yard drive.
McCoy's touchdown put Marist up 21-0 just 1:06 into the third quarter. Campbell answered on its next drive with a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Dakota Wolf on a fourth-down quarterback sneak. The Red Foxes closed out the scoring with 13l27 to play on Rios' touchdown, an 11-yard strike from Looney.
For Campbell, Wolf was 9-for-19 for 86 yards through the air, and led the Camels with 39 yards on 15 carries. Ben Bolling caught five passes for 75 yards. Defensively, Andrew Yost had a team-high 12 tackles.
