POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist Volleyball Head Coach Tom Hanna has announced the signing of two student-athletes for the class of 2017. Liz Gassman and Amanda Schlegel have both committed to join the Red Foxes for the 2013 season.
Liz Gassman - 6-1 - Middle Blocker - Glenside, PA / Abington High School / Synergy
Gassman will come to Poughkeepsie after winning a national championship playing for USA Volleyball 17 with Synergy, the same club program as junior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.). She was named Abington High School's team MVP each of the past three seasons and was voted a team captain for her senior year. Gassman was selected to the All-Conference First Team following her senior season after being a member of the Second Team after her sophomore and junior seasons and an Honorable Mention as a freshman. Academically, she is a member of the National Honor Society and was the recipient of Abington's President's Academic Excellence Award.
Hanna on Gassman: "We are excited to have Liz join our program. She is another great student-athlete who will bring us experience and a fast arm upon her arrival next August. It's great to have another talented player from Synergy join the Red Foxes, as well as a player with a national championship to her credit. Coach Johnson does a great job of preparing his players for the next level and we look forward to great things from Liz."
Amanda Schlegel - 5-9 - Setter - Austin, TX / St. Stephen's Episcopal High School / Austin Performance Volleyball
Schlegel will join Marist after four successful seasons at St. Stephen's Episcopal where she was a three-time conference champion 2010-2012. Named a team as a senior, Schlegel was also selected to the USA Volleyball High Performance camps for both indoor and outdoor volleyball.
Hanna on Schlegel: "Amanda is a very athletic setter who will do a great job running our tempo and improving our out-of-system offense. We have had a number of great players from the Austin area and Amanda will be no exception to that track record. She has had great experiences under Coach Poppinga in high school and Coach Krueger at Austin Performance that we will be the beneficiaries of here at Marist. I am extremely excited that Amanda chose to become a Red Fox."
