POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team (12-6, 6-1 MAAC) was ranked tenth in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's Northeast Poll. The Red Foxes managed to stay in the rankings after splitting a pair of conference games at Manhattan and Saint Peter's.
On Friday, the team continued won its sixth straight conference victory with a 2-1 decision over Manhattan. Facing off with a defensive-minded Jasper team that is backstopped by the MAAC's leader in gaa and save percentage in Kara Davis, the Red Foxes put forth a strong offensive effort and tested Davis throughout the contest. Goal scorers, junior Alycia Cartica (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) and freshman Megan McEnroe (St. James, N.Y.) registered two of Marist's 11 shots on goal.
On Sunday on the road at Saint Peter's, the Red Foxes fell in a heart-breaking 2-1 double overtime contest with just 49 seconds remaining to play. Marist controlled the tempo, possession and offensive opportunities, but unfortunately connected on only one of their 18 shots on goal. Junior Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) netted the team's only goal off of an Alysa Murphy (Douglassville, Pa.) assist in the 50th minute.
The Red Foxes are the only MAAC team in the top 10 of the poll and one of only three non-Big East schools ranked. This is the team's third time being ranked in 2012.
Marist will conclude the regular season portion of its 2012 schedule with a pair of home MAAC contests this weekend; versus Loyola on Friday at 7 p.m. and versus Rider on Sunday at 1 p.m.
