POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's and women's crew programs will open their 2012-13 season Saturday, Sept. 29 when they host Army and Fordham in the annual Poughkeepsie Regatta. The race, which coincides with Marist's Family Weekend, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with boats launching from the Historic Cornell Boathouse at Longview Park on the banks of the Hudson River.
This regatta pays tribute to the original Poughkeepsie Regatta which was raced on the Hudson River. For more than 50 years, the Poughkeepsie waterfront was the site of the historic IRA National Championships, featuring crews from colleges all over the country. Marist revived this tradition in 2009 with the Quadricentennial Poughkeepsie Regatta. After again racing in 2010, the race was cancelled last fall due to inclement weather.
Originally the Poughkeepsie Regatta was a four-mile course beginning at Roger's Point in Hyde Park, N.Y. and finishing at the Mid-Hudson Bridge. This year will see multiple, shorter races taking place in the viewing area in front of Marist's Historic Cornell Boathouse. There will be a series of 1,500-meter races, five men's races and five women's races, with a finish line at the Marist Boathouse. Each men's flights will be closely followed by a women's flights.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early to the Historic Cornell Boathouse at Longview Park to see the launching of the boats. Be sure to come to this historic regatta on the scenic banks of the Hudson River.
