Menís Tennis Kicks Off 2012 With A Bang At Brown Invitational
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Marist men's tennis team opened their 2012-13 season in a strong way Friday afternoon, posting six wins in singles play, as well as taking two out of three in doubles, in the first day of the Brown Invitational. All the action on Friday was quarterfinals matches.
In the singles' Yellow Flight, Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) defeated his opponent from Boston University without even dropping a point, 6-0, 6-0. Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) both easily defeated their respective adversaries in the Red Flight. Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) took down his opponent from Bryant 6-3, 6-0 in the Purple Flight while Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) defeated his Boston University foe 6-3, 6-3. Billy Bishop (Houston, Texas) had a great come-from-behind win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, against his opponent from Merrimack.
In doubles, the duo of Van Eck and Rossi easily moved past their Boston University opponent by an 8-2 score. The sophomore pair of Giudici and Dube took down a pair of UConn Huskies 9-7. Additionally, Reznek and Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) won by default over a pair from Colgate.
"In our first tournament of the fall, I was pleased to see that, on the first day, we got six singles' victories as well as two out of three in doubles," Head Coach Tim Smith said. "I am looking forward to see what our players can do tomorrow."
Semifinals action at the Brown Invitational continues on Saturday with championships taking place on Sunday.
