ARLINGTON, TEXAS - Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had a triple-double, but it was not enough as the Marist volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the Hilton Classic, hosted by Texas-Arlington. The Red Foxes fell in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) to Southern Mississippi before falling short against Northwestern State 3-1 (25-13, 12-25, 25-20, 25-14). Sophomore Gena Russo, in her first two matches as the libero, was named to the All-Tournament Team after establishing career-highs in digs in each of Saturday's matches with 15 and 19.
Against Northwestern State, Stoiberg had team-highs with 10 kills and 17 assists while also adding 10 digs for her second triple-double of the season. She also finished with three blocks and three service aces. Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) was second on the team in both kills (8) and digs (12). Kelsey Lahey and Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) each had seven kills while Gilbert added a team-high five total blocks, including one solo. Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) had 16 assists.
Earlier in the day, Marist fell to Southern Mississippi despite Lahey setting a new career-high in hills with 10, a day after she hit nine against Texas-Arlington. Stoiberg was second with eight kills and also had 20 assists. Estes and Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) each had six kills while Stephens also added three blocks. Brady had 18 assists.
The Red Foxes return home next weekend to open up conference play as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponents Canisius and Niagara visit McCann Arena. Marist will take on the Golden Griffins on Saturday at 2 p.m. before playing the Purple Eagles on Sunday at 2 p.m.
