Last Time Out: The Red Foxes began their 2012 campaign on Friday, Aug. 24 against the UC Riverside Highlanders. In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, UC Riverside earned the 3-0 victory. Though a three goal deficit, the game proved much closer as the score stood at 1-0 with under 10 minutes to go. Junior goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski (London, Ontario) put forth a strong defensive effort in goal as he made six saves in his Red Fox debut.
Nine student-athletes: Simon Laugsand, Wes Finch, Matty Berman, Greg Davis, Emeka Nwachukwu, MJ Stellwag, Evan Southworth, Conor Gleba and Sokalski, made their Red Fox debuts on Friday.
Previous Meeting: The two teams met last season on Sept. 1, as the Red Foxes traveled to Boston and fell by a score of 2-0. The Huskies registered goals in each half on their way to the victory. In a defensive game, the teams combined for just 19 shots and only 6 on goal, as Northeastern held slight advantages in both categories, 11-8 and 4-2. Krystian Witkowski led the Red Fox offense with four shots.
Scouting Northeastern: The Huskies finished last season with a 10-6-3 record and the 62nd best RPI ranking, while receiving votes in the final NSCAA South Atlantic Regional Poll. The team is led by Dante Marini in the midfield and Don Anding at forward. Coming off successful season in which Marini registered 19 points (7g-5a) and Anding 5 points (2g-1a), the duo was recognized on the CAA's Preseason All-League Team that was released earlier in August. Senior Oliver Blum gives the team a veteran presence in goal as he started 18 games in 2011 and posted a 1.14 GAA.
Long Road Ahead: Following this matchup, the Red Foxes will be on the road for five straight contests; Aug. 31 at New Hampshire, Sept. 4 at NJIT, Sept. 9 at North Carolina State, Sept. 14 at Radford and Sept. 16 vs. UNC-Asheville (at Radford). Marist will next be at home on Sunday, Sept. 23 versus Yale at 1:30 p.m.
