POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Athletics Department and men's tennis head coach Tim Smith have announced the Red Foxes fall schedule to kick off their 2012-13. The Red Foxes, winners of four of the past five Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, will take part in four prestigious tournaments as well as a dual match at Connecticut.
The slate kicks off Sept. 14-16 at the Brown Fall Classic. The team experienced great success last season at this event, winning a total of 15 singles' matches and six doubles' matches. Both Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy), Billy Bishop (Houston, Texas) and Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) all made the finals of their respective Flights in singles. They were outdone, however, by freshman Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) who won all three of his matches to take the title in his Flight. The duo of Van Eck and Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) won the back draw final of their doubles' Flight.
The following weekend, Sept. 21-23, Marist will compete in the USTA Invitational at Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The tournament features the top players in the region. Last fall, Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) reached the finals of his singles' draw.
The Red Foxes will then play a midweek match at Big East foe Connecticut on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The Huskies visited Poughkeepsie last season and Marist defeated them by a 5-2 score. After UConn took the point at doubles, the Red Foxes won every singles' match besides the third slot.
October opens with the Columbia Invite on the weekend of Oct. 5-7. Last year the Red Foxes took nine matches in singles' action, and two of the three doubles teams won a match.
Marist will conclude their fall season a couple of weeks later with the four-day ITA Regionals at Yale, Oct. 18-22. Last season, Dube had great success at the tournament, winning both of his pre-qualifier matches to advance to the field of 96, where he won again to reach the final 64. Reznek and Van Eck also both were victorious in the first round. The doubles teams of Dube/Van Eck and Reznek/Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) each won a match to advance to the round of 32.
"Our fall schedule does exactly what we want it to do for the players on our team," Smith said. "By participating in the Brown Invitational, USTA Invitational, Columbia Classic, and ITA Regional Championships at Yale, we are positioning our players to each play twenty matches in the fall. These tournaments, coupled with our match against Big East foe University of Connecticut, allows me to really help determine what positions our players will be playing once our conference and dual matches begin in the spring."The Red Foxes will be looking for their fourth straight MAAC Regular Season Title in the 2012-13 season after going 15-6 overall last season and 6-0 in conference play. Following four straight MAAC Tournament Championships from 2008-11, Marist fell in the 2012 championship match to second-seeded Fairfield.
