Incoming Red Foxes Earning National Recognition
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Derek Sganga (Manorville, N.Y.) and Dillon Walker (Wawa, Pa.), two incoming freshmen on the Marist men's lacrosse team, have been earning recognition for their playing efforts during the high school careers. Sganga was named to Inside Lacrosse's list of Top-20 Post-Graduate Players while Walker has been selected to play in the 2012 Champion All-American Showcase.
Sganga, who played his high school career at Eastport South Manor Jr./Sr. High School, played an additional post-graduate year at Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut. During his 2012 season, he scored seven goals and recorded five assists while collecting 107 ground balls and causing 39 turnovers. He was named Avon's Defensive MVP and earned All-New England honors. A long-stick midfielder, Sganga is one of only two players at his position to make Inside Lacrosse's list.
Walker, who just completed a very decorated career at Salesianum School in Delaware, will take part in the All-American Showcase this week, July 22-27, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The 2012 Delaware Player of the Year, Walker will play Attack for Team Pride at the showcase. Walker finished his senior season leading all high school lacrosse players from the Philadelphia area in scoring with 107 points. He tied for seventh in goals with 62 and was sixth with 45 assists. For his career at Salesianum, Walker scored more than 165 goals and assisted on over 150 others for more than 300 points.Both Sganga and Walker will arrive in Poughkeepsie this fall and will look to help the Red Foxes to their fourth straight MAAC Tournament next spring.
