Women's Tennis Clinches Spot In MAAC Tournament With Win At Rider
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - In a dominate performance, the Marist women's tennis squad clinched its spot in the upcoming MAAC Tournament, where they will look to defend its 2011 MAAC Championship, with a 7-0 victory over Rider. On Friday, the Red Foxes cruised in singles action with not one of their individual players dropping a set. In combined action, freshman Tessa Lewis (Lewiston, N.Y.) swept her opponents, 6-0, 6-0 in #6 singles and 8-0 in #3 doubles to lead the Red Foxes.
In singles play: senior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) won #1 singles over Marly Roche, 6-2, 6-3, junior Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) won her #2 singles match over Tricia Ashmore, 6-1, 6-4, sophomore Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) won #3 singles over Michelle Caravaglio, 6-3, 6-2, freshman Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) earned the win in #4 singles 6-0, 6-1 over Allison Clay, while Kayla O'Donovan defeated Maria Eldridge in #5 singles 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action, the teams of Sun and Campbell at #2 and Lewis and McCarthy at #3 earned Marist the point with 8-1 and 8-0 victories, respectively. Playing at #1 doubles, the duo of O'Donovan and Tahir fell in tie-breaker action, 8-7 (10-6).
The Red Foxes will be off until MAAC Tournament play begins next Saturday, April 28 in West Windsor, N.J.
