STONY BROOK – Marist freshman Spencer Johnson (Bristol, Conn.) qualified for the USA Track & Field Junior Championships in the 10,000 meters on Saturday at the Wolfie Invitational, held Saturday at Stony Brook.

Johnson ran a time of 32:19.34, which is 0.66 seconds faster than the new qualifying standard of 32:20.00. He became the third 13th athlete in school history to qualify for junior nationals, and the first with the new standard. He set a personal best by over 42 seconds, and ran a negative split, as his second 5,000 meters was faster than his first. This year’s junior nationals will be held July 5-6 at the University of Oregon.

Marist also received personal bests from sophomore Omar Perez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) in the 10,000, freshman Saad Baig (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the 3,000, junior Kyle Hannafin (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the 1,500 and freshmen Nestor Taylor (Cumberland, Maine) and Nate Lungarini in the 800.
