POUGHKEEPSIE -- Trailing by four with less than 10 seconds to go, the Marist men's basketball team got a lay-up from junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.), a steal from senior forward Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) and a three-pointer from Bowie to earn a 65-64 win over Siena on McCann Arena on Friday night.

With 12.0 seconds remaining, Siena’s Lavon Long hit a pair of free throws to give the Saints a 64-60 lead. Neither team had any timeouts remaining at that point. Lewis drove the length of the floor and converted a lay-up with 6.8 seconds left, making the score 64-62. Then, Bowie stole the inbounds pass, and hit a three from the left corner to put Marist up 65-64 with 3.7 seconds left. Siena was unable to get off a shot on its final possession.

Bowie’s shot gave Marist its first lead in over 12 minutes of play. Siena led by eight with 4:55 to go, and five with 21 seconds left.

The Red Foxes’ largest deficit was nine in the first half, as a three-pointer by Ryan Oliver gave the Saints a 26-17 lead with 3:32 left until halftime. However, Marist closed the half on an 8-0 run, and started the second half on an 8-2 run to lead by five.

Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) led Marist with 16 points, and senior center Adam Kemp (Sherill, N.Y.) had a season-high 15 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Lewis totaled 14 points and seven rebounds to go along with team highs of six assists and four steals. Bowie finished with 10 points, two rebounds and two steals.

Marist shot just .311 (19-for-61) from the field, but the Red Foxes were 7-for-17 (.412) from three-point range and .870 (20-for-23) from the free-throw line. Marist hit five of its eight threes (.625) in the second half, as well as nine of its 10 free-throw attempts (.900). The Red Foxes also committed just nine turnovers.

Siena’s Marquis Wright led all scorers with 20 points. Long had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

With the win, Marist improved to 10-15 overall and 7-8 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Siena fell to 11-15 overall and 7-8 in the MAAC.

Marist returns to action on Sunday at Monmouth. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
