Maristís Season Ends With Loss To Siena In MAAC Championships
TRENTON, N.J. – The Marist baseball team had its season come to an end on Friday with a 12-5 loss to Siena in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships, held at Arm & Hammer Park.
Marist trailed 3-0 after the first two innings, but took the lead with a four-run fourth. Senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) belted a two-out, two-run single to put the Red Foxes ahead. However, Siena left fielder Andres Ortiz answered with a two-run homer in the fifth, which gave the Saints the lead for good. Siena scored runs in seven innings – one in the first, two in the second, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, one in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Siena outhit Marist, 15-10. Freshman designated hitter Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman center fielder Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H.) each had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Junior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) had two hits. Freshman second baseman Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.) had an RBI double and two walks.
For Siena, Ortiz finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Second baseman Mike Allen was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and shortstop Tyler Martis was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks.
Matt Quintana (5-1) earned the win for Siena with 5.2 effective innings of relief to finish the game. Quintana scattered seven hits, but also allowed just one run and did not walk anyone. He struck out two.
Marist senior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.), who went the first 4.1 innings, took the loss and fell to 7-7. Sophomore left-hander Rich Vrana (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) finished the game by retiring all five Siena hitters he faced, including one strikeout.
Marist’s season ended at 27-24-1, marking the fifth consecutive year the Red Foxes finished with a record of .500 or better.
