POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Freshman Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) set the program’s single-season runs batted in record in Marist’s non-conference doubleheader sweep of Hartford at Gartland Field on Thursday. The Red Foxes won 12-1 in a first game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule, and prevailed 5-2 in game two.
Cheek homered in both games, and went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBIs on the day. She now has 48 RBIs this season, breaking the previous record of 46 set by Amanda Koldjeski in 2001.
Here is a closer look at both games:
Game One – Marist 12, Hartford 1 (5 innings)
Marist erupted for four runs in the first and three in the second. Cheek’s three-run homer got the Red Foxes on the scoreboard, and Marist scored again on an RBI double by senior catcher Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.) later in the inning. A three-run homer by senior third baseman Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.) in the second put Marist up 7-0.
Hartford scored its lone run in the third, but Marist answered with five in the fourth thanks to four hits and four walks to close out the scoring.
Sophomore Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) pitched all five innings, and allowed just three hits to earn the win. Lalli, who struck out two, improved to 7-3. Koltz finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs. Freshman center fielder Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Ana Aliberti (0-1), who went one-plus, took the loss for Hartford. Second baseman Anna Andrews was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Game Two – Marist 5, Hartford 2
Hartford opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but Marist answered with three in the bottom half of the frame, capped by a two-run double off the bat of freshman shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.).
Hartford cut its deficit to one in the top of the fifth, but Marist answered with back-to-back homers in the bottom half of the inning from Cheek and junior catcher Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.).
Senior Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) went the first five innings for the victory as she improved to 11-8, and junior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) went the last two for her first save of the season.
Brittany Beebe, who went four-plus innings, took the loss for Hartford and fell to 2-7. Shortstop Kate Wacyk, center fielder Erica Phelps and catcher Peyton Fisher had two hits apiece for the Hawks.
Marist, which has won six straight, improved to 27-22. Hartford fell to 19-31.
Marist will close out the regular season on Sunday with a home conference doubleheader against Siena. First pitch is at noon. Prior to game one, Senior Day ceremonies will be held. The Red Foxes, who have already clinched a berth in this year’s MAAC Championships, control their own destiny for a MAAC regular-season championship.
