POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In a matchup of the top two teams in the preseason MAAC poll, the visiting Rider Broncs defeated the Marist men's swimming and diving team by a score of 177.5 to 122.5. Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) lead a quartet of Red Foxes, who earned individual event victories on the afternoon at the McCann Natatorium as the sophomore finished first in the 100-yd butterfly and 200-yd IM.
Ruddy's day began with a setback by the smallest of margins in the 100-yd breaststroke as he was out-touched by Rider's Julien Hensen by 0.02 seconds at 59.90. Unfazed, he came back in the final two individual events of the meet and swam to victories in the 100-yd butterfly at 52.47 and in the 200-yd IM at 1:57.02.
Fellow sophomore John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) nearly joined Ruddy as a multi-event winner as he won the 50-yd free with a time of 21.73 was within 0.65 seconds of first place in the 100-yd race.
Junior Nick Spinella (Franklin Square, N.Y.) was Marist's final winner in swimming events as he won a neck-and-neck battle with Johnny Funk in the 200-yd backstroke was a final time of 1:54.04
In diving action, freshman Josh Dodway (Niskayuna, N.Y.) won a hotly-contested 3-meter event with a score of 290.70. Teammate Sean Molloy (Slingerlands, N.Y.) came in second at 285.07. First place to fifth place was separated by just 13.28 points. Sophomore Jacob Baker (Shavertown, Pa.) was the highest placing Red Fox in the 1-meter with a second place at 300.15.
The Red Foxes (2-2, 2-1 MAAC) will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to Baltimore to participate in the H2Ounds Invitational at Loyola. Day 1 events begin on Friday, Nov. 30.
