Brett Houseal was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday

EDISON, N.J. - Junior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) of the Marist baseball team was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

Houseal tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout as Marist defeated Canisius 9-0 in a seven-inning game on May 12. Houseal allowed just two walks and struck out six, as he needed just 81 pitches to complete his outing. He threw 51 pitches for strikeouts, and recorded 12 groundouts. He also recorded three 1-2-3 innings, did not allow a Canisius runner to reach second base, and faced just two batters over the minimum.

Houseal has now won each of his last four starts, and stands at 4-5 with a 4.18 ERA. He has 40 strikeouts against just 14 walks in 66.2 innings, and has now tossed two complete game shutouts in seven-inning contests this season. His first came at Rider on April 21.

Houseal's award makes it seven that the Red Foxes have earned from the MAAC this season. Junior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was named MAAC Player of the Week on May 7. Sophomore outfielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) was named MAAC Player of the Week on April 23. Red-shirt senior left-hander Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week on March 26 and April 16. Freshman second baseman Alec Petrone (Mahopac, N.Y.) was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on April 2, and freshman catcher Mark Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.) was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Feb. 21.

The Marist baseball team (24-23) returns to action with a non-conference game at St. John's on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Marist will close out the regular season with a three-game MAAC series at Fairfield on Thursday and Friday. The Red Foxes and Stags will play a single game Thursday at noon, and a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon. Marist needs to win all three games to qualify for the 2012 MAAC Baseball Championship, which will start on May 24.
